Decolonizing our technology

I just wanted to reflect on the critiques on technology and remote learning. These are some of the things I noticed about why it failed during the pandemic.

  1. It's dehumanizing-it created an inauthentic way of communicating and dialoguing.
  2. It's hard to troubleshoot-managing everything remotely had its technological issues and debugging.
  3. It's inequitable-it created an environment that isolated individuals, especially those with a lack of resources and overwhelming circumstances.

Technology, especially this concept of hybrid learning, was not build for a pandemic. But, using technology is not a failing strategy or approach to bridge the gaps of our inequities in society. We must not condemn it but embrace. From the ISTE 2021 conferenece, I heard from youth voices explaining that we must decolonize technology to make it meaningful and impactful. Technology is a language that is so customary and standard to the new generation and we, as educators, must adapt or see our next generation of learners fall behind because of our egotistical views of how to approach education.
