Critique on SAMR Model

SAMR stands for substitution, augmentation, modification, and reinvention.

The SAMR model is an approach to technology integration in the classroom. It is an approach to transition the classroom experience into more digital and technological experience. The SAMR model is a way to think about easing technology use into instruction without feeling sensory overload for the instructor and the students.

My critique with integration models are that they are designed for commercial implemenation and implementation within a classroom. The problem is that majority of schools are not functioning in the traditional model. Most instructors are not even in the hybrid teaching experience. How can we integrate technology when we are already immersed in it. Immersion has taken the control of our mindset and I feel that is where the issue stems from, alongside mental health and isolation damage from this immersion of technology. From this model, we are all in the redefinition stage. We are all in the running stage instead of learning to walk. I think to alleviate the immersion of technology mindset, we need to see technology as a tool and rely on the strategies that made us effective teachers in the first place. We need to focus on the social and emotional health of our learners, focus on culturally relevant pedagogy, and critical pedagogy to liberate the minds and hearts of our students. Only then, can technology can be integrated to the experience to help us achieve liberation and justice.
